Art Therapy

What is art therapy?

Art therapy combines the  creative process of art making  and theories of psychotherapy.
In art therapy, the process of making art and the art product are tools to facilitate insightful exploration and  communication of thoughts and feelings that may be challenging to express verbally. During an art therapy session, the focus is in on the art making process. Together, the artist and the art therapist explore metaphors and symbols that may be present the art product.

Who would benefit from art therapy?

Art therapy is for people of all ages and abilities. Art therapy is about self-expression and exploration, not about making  “good” art. Prior art experience, skill or technique is not required to participate and benefit from art therapy.

How does art therapy work?

  • Art therapy provides a supportive environment to  safely explore and express  thoughts, feelings and experiences.
  • Art therapy offers opportunities for nonverbal,  nonlinear expression and communication of one’s internal world.
  • Art therapy enhances the mind body connection through combining the physical experience of art making with the expressive  component.
  • Individuals are encouraged  to explore traditional and non-traditional art media and techniques to discover  what best facilitates their unique, individual expression.
